Workshops
Rising Above: How to Soar Through (and Survive!) Complex Proposals
Sunday, Sept. 22 | 1 – 5p | Workshop
Not all proposals are created equal! Numerous elements contribute to and increase proposal complexity. These elements include personnel (both internal partners and external collaborators), sponsors, size, and scope of the work, subawards, and many more. In this workshop, we will discuss what makes a proposal complex, how to manage a complex proposal effectively, and our recommendations and best practices so that you can thrive no matter how crazy a proposal may be in your future!
Speakers
- Jeff Derr, Principal Consultant, Attain Partners
- Noelle Strom, Director of External Funding, College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, University of Denver
Sessions and Discussion Groups
Reaching New Heights in Compliance: From FAPIIS to SAM.gov – Insights, Case Studies, and Best Practices for Organizational Success
Monday, Sept. 23 | 2:45 – 3:45p | Concurrent Session
Integrity records, once viewed at FAPIIS.gov, are now on SAM.gov and are called “responsibility/qualification (R/Q) records.” What has changed? What is the same? How is this federal database currently used to ensure federal contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements are awarded to responsible entities? Are you responsible?
Learning Objectives
Participants will learn and understand what FAPIIS is/was, the history behind it, and where it is now (SAM.gov). We will then dive into real-life examples and case studies to discuss situations organizations have faced. Finally, participants will discuss best practices and strategies to take away as they return to their organizations and try their best to promote a compliant atmosphere!
Speakers
- Robert Chan, University of California, Office of the President
- Jeff Derr, Principal Consultant, Attain Partners
Checklists and Spreadsheets and Tools, Oh My!
Departmental/PUI | Concurrent Session
We often find ourselves in situations where we have very limited time, tools, or options to complete a task. Sometimes, we work in very small offices, or we are new to our roles and not yet familiar with all the processes and requirements of being a research administrator. There are also times when our institutions do not have a system in place to manage the necessary functions. In these cases, we need a tool, procedure, or checklist to help manage the situation. If your institution has a system that manages and tracks these tasks, that’s great! Come and share your tools. However, for many of us, such tools do not exist at our institutions, or we don’t know who to ask. So, why reinvent the wheel when you can come and see what others are using? Trying to keep track of effort changes? We have a spreadsheet for that. Need to track subawards? We have a spreadsheet for that too. Need to know what to do at closeout? We have a checklist. Looking for a standard template to request RPPR information? We have that as well. Come and see what others are using and share the tools that have made your life easier.

Reaching New Heights Together: Navigating Proposal Reviews Across Institutional Altitudes
Tuesday, Sept. 24 | 1:15 – 2:30p | Concurrent Session: Pre-Award
This session aims to build a better understanding of the role Central and Departmental offices serve in the proposal review process. We discuss the overall role that each office serves in the process, including similarities and differences in their responsibilities. We also share our best practices and recommendations for communication across the different offices. In addition, insight will be provided to help with any individual who is considering transitioning from one role to another.
