Driving Growth and Readiness in a Changing Research Landscape
Attain Partners was honored to be a sponsor of NCURA’s 67th Annual Meeting earlier this month in Washington, DC. Every year, the research administration community comes together for this gathering of minds—a time to collaborate, learn, and grow together as one.

Research administration is the operational backbone that keeps academic and nonprofit research running smoothly. In a field that’s constantly adapting to new regulations, evolving technologies, and shifting priorities, we must continue to strengthen our skills and strategies to meet the moment and prepare for what’s next.
This year, Attain Partners was on-site with our team of experts to share our knowledge through one-on-one conversations at our booth, engaging sessions, and interactive discussion groups. Over the course of four days, we led 12 sessions on high-impact topics from effort reporting and AI tools to Uniform Guidance revisions and more.
And while the sessions themselves provided plenty of insights, what stood out most was the caliber of conversations happening in the rooms. As Melinda Cotten, Senior Specialist Leader, reflected:
“I was amazed that there are many mid-career research administrators, not yet in leadership roles, asking insightful and well-informed questions. This suggests a strong interest in career and succession planning, deepening expertise, and seeking advancement opportunities within the field, indicating a robust pipeline of knowledgeable professionals ready to drive the industry forward.”
That energy—curiosity, ambition, and commitment to growth—was palpable throughout the week.
When the Topics Hit Home
Our sessions drew packed rooms and sparked lively discussions. Highlights included:
Cost Share Decoded
Leah Acajabon delivered practical, ready-to-use strategies for tracking, documenting, and reporting cost share, giving attendees tools to stay audit-ready and confident.
Leadership Gaps & Panic Attacks
During her session, Courtney Swaney provided attendees with rapid-response plans for when succession planning falls short, along with clear steps to prevent future leadership gaps.
Uniform Guidance Revisions
During his session, Gil Tran broke down the latest changes with his signature clarity and energy, equipping attendees to prepare well before the October deadline.

Leveraging AI in Research Administration
Kathleen Halley-Octa’s session demonstrated how tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot can save hours each week, boost accuracy, and strengthen compliance efforts.
Sessions sparked real conversations that carried well beyond the conference rooms. Leah Acajabon, Senior Consultant, captured it perfectly:
“Post-award topics like cost share, effort reporting, and audit readiness remain top priorities for research administrators—our sessions sparked meaningful conversations and practical questions. The Internal Audit Assessment Training session highlighted the importance of proactive compliance strategies and the value of internal assessments in identifying process gaps and strengthening institutional readiness.”
That mix of expertise and open dialogue is what makes the NCURA Annual Meeting such a unique experience.
The Energy of the NCURA Community
Of course, the sessions were just one part of the story. The conversations at Booths 300 + 302 were equally rewarding. As Leah shared:
“Connecting with attendees at the booth was especially rewarding—hearing their feedback and appreciation reinforced the impact of our work and the trust institutions place in our support.”

And it wasn’t just polite handshakes; attendees came ready with thoughtful questions, candid stories, and a willingness to share challenges. That spirit of collaboration is what turns a professional meeting into a true community gathering.
Looking Ahead
We left DC by the dedication of research administrators across the country, by the innovative approaches being shared, and by the collective drive to make our institutions stronger and more resilient.
We’re already looking forward to next year’s meeting—but until then, our team is here to help.
