Dive into our conversation with Henry Attaway below to learn how he leverages his expertise to drive impact for higher education institutions and nonprofit organizations.
Attain Partners (AP): What did you do before joining Attain Partners?
Henry Attaway (HA): Most recently, I was a Director at a management consulting firm. In this role, my responsibilities included managing engagements and supporting transformation initiatives across various industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, and state and local government. Before working in consulting, I had experience working in higher education and nonprofit Advancement. I started in fundraising as a frontline fundraiser, then moved on to Advancement services, where I served as a business analyst, change manager, and Salesforce functional lead.
AP: What brought you to Attain Partners?
HA: I was drawn to Attain Partners because of the firm’s focus on purpose-driven organizations. Having spent my early career in the public and voluntary sectors, I was thrilled for the opportunity to support these organizations, their staff, and their constituents. Being surrounded by colleagues who share similar passions and experiences only solidified my decision to join Attain Partners.
AP: Which of our seven core values speak to you the most?
HA: Team for Speed. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of being a part of several high-performing teams. These experiences taught me that a team that prioritizes its customers’ success and the well-being of its members can achieve almost anything. As a project manager, I consider fostering a culture of trust and collaboration fundamental to my role. I firmly believe that consulting teams are most successful when we partner with our clients to form a unified team.
AP: What do you like most about the work you do?
HA: I love helping clients overcome their biggest hurdles. Whether implementing a new CRM, formulating a new strategy, or developing new processes, we have the privilege of making our clients’ lives easier so they can stay focused on their missions.
AP: What are the biggest ways you’ve seen Advancement efforts impact organizations?
HA: Advancement plays a crucial role in higher education by enabling the college experience and ensuring better student outcomes. Advancement professionals are responsible for connecting philanthropists with the causes they care about, which results in fewer financial barriers for students, more research funding, and more employment opportunities. With nonprofits, Advancement teams also help to strengthen our communities by funding important initiatives in areas such as healthcare, youth programs, arts and culture, and environmental initiatives.
AP: What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
HA: The most challenging part of my job is being the hub for project communication and decisions. This often means I serve as the translator for technical and business teams and balance competing priorities. The key to success in this role is trust. I build trust by ensuring I am up to date on all aspects of the project, understanding my clients’ priorities, offering clear options and alternatives, and providing timely and transparent communication.
AP: What do you read and watch to keep current?
HA: I keep current by staying in touch with my professional network. Current and former colleagues and clients are a terrific source for best practices and lessons learned. I also love reading. My bookshelf is full of books on strategy, leadership, innovation, communication, and change enablement.
